Update: Service Alberta & Alberta Agriculture Announces Additional Funding for High-Speed Internet Access in Rural Alberta
ABCtech has been an advocate for rural broadband issues since it sponsored a report on Alberta's Rural Broadband Status Report in 2009. Allan Bly, an ABCtech director as been a primary resource for the process that has emerged to support rural broadband expansion in unserviced areas of rural Alberta. WiSPnet is the tool he is advocating for rural residents and municipalities.

The March $10.5 Million Funding Announcement:
Service Alberta and Alberta Agriculture announced "The Final Mile Rural Connectivity Initiative", an additional $10.5million for Phases 2 and 3. Phase 1 was the $5 million announced in January to support municipalities, First Nations and Metis Settlements that have plans ready to deliver high-speed Internet access to their communities. This new announcement is for Phase 2 with up to $900,000 to reduce the distance costs of accessing high-speed satellite Internet for Albertans in low-density remote areas. For Phase 3, the government is working with Internet service providers to add infrastructure to the remainder of unserviced areas in rural Alberta, including the extreme north and south of the province. A Request for Comments with draft bidding guidelines will be posted shortly. Tenders for service will be released later this year through an open and competitive procurement process following the Request For Comments.

The January $5 Million Funding Announcement:
The Final Mile Rural Community Program is part of the Government of Alberta’s Final Mile Rural Connectivity Initiative to extend high-speed Internet connectivity to the vast majority of Albertans. This program will consider projects that deliver high-speed Internet connectivity to unserviced locations in rural communities in Alberta. $5 million in funding is available.
Unserviced locations are areas that include Alberta households that do not have access to high-speed Internet service at a minimum speed of 1.5 Mbps download.
Application deadline is March 31, 2012.
