CALGARY — Greengate Power Corporation has received approval from the Alberta provincial government to construct and operate its Halkirk I Wind Project, which will provide clean power to 50,000 homes.

The 150-megawatt Halkirk project, which will include 100 turbines standing 80 metres high, will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 300,000 tonnes a year, the equivalent of taking 60,000 cars off the road, according to the Calgary-based company. The wind farm is expected to begin providing energy in early 2011.

Besides the $350-million wind farm in Halkirk, which is about 275 kilometres northeast of Calgary, Greengate has nine other projects planned at six locations across Alberta worth close to $4 billion, CEO Dan Balaban said earlier last year.
